Homemade is one of my favourite words, and when that word graces my ears, I pause, take a deep breath and sigh because I am transported back to a simpler, and slower time. A time where my mother would take care of the cooking every night, and make three different meals from scratch. One for me and my two fussy eater sisters. Stick the word homemade in front of a dish and it’s sure to be a winner because of the nostalgic effect it has. Now, as a self sufficient adult (more of less) homemade sounds a lot better, or easier, than in reality. 9 times out of 10 you’re out of pocket because of all the ingredients that needs purchasing. Plus cooking from scratch usually takes valuable and precious time.
While it is true that my lunch and dinner never comes from a packet, or from a deliveroo driver, I never think of my meals as homemade. To me, a meal that is ‘homemade’ has to be something traditional. A classic. Something wholesome and hearty, like Shepards Pie or Sweet Potato Curry. So when I had the urge to play dress up and put a pinny on, I quickly realised that I am not the girl next door who bakes every weekend, nor am I the person who lends her neighbour a cup of sugar. I am the girl who owns 1 sharp knife, 2 plates and 3 siamese cats that steal food from my plate.
They say boys think about sex every 7 seconds. The girl version of this is humous. Yes, that’s right. Girls think about sex, I mean humous every 7 seconds. So my gut feeling got the best of me and I decided sex, I mean, homemade humous was the only option! Easy and absolutely delicious. Talking about him, not the humous.
